Perfume, Historical Thriller, Paris…I was sold to read this book as soon I was asked if I was interested, I have read several novels and thrillers set during the second world war but never involving espionage, the Parisian glamour from the Moulin Rouge, The cabarets and the night life from the city back in the day.
The Perfume Thief weaves an intoxicating tapestry of historical intrigue, romance, and defiance amidst the dark backdrop of German-occupied Paris during World War II. At the heart of this captivating narrative stands Clementine, a remarkable American ex-pat in her 70s, who fearlessly dons tuxedos and trousers, challenging societal norms when doing so could be perilous. Clem’s allure lies not only in her audacious appearance but in her bold spirit as a queer thief-turned-perfumer. As Paris faces the brutal grip of Nazi occupation, she navigates the treacherous streets with caution, mindful of the danger that surrounds her. Yet, her resilience and determination shine brightly, driven by her profound love for a chosen family she holds dear.
Day, the nightclub singer, and Blue, the aspiring actor, both queer like Clem, share an unbreakable bond that transcends the horrors of war. As kindred souls, they find solace in each other’s company, while the world outside remains unforgiving to those who dare to be themselves. When another nightclub performer, Zoe St. Angel, seeks Clem’s expertise as both a perfumer and a thief, the stakes soar to new heights. Zoe’s Jewish heritage is at risk of being exposed through her father’s missing diary, now held captive by the sinister Nazi officer, Oskar Voss. Thus begins an evocative and heartrending tale of resistance, love, and loss that leaves readers spellbound.
Schaffert’s prose is a symphony of emotions, immersing readers in a world where fragrances evoke memories and moments of tenderness stand juxtaposed with the brutal realities of war. Through exquisite storytelling, the author paints vivid portraits of characters whose complexities and depths render them unforgettable. The Perfume Thief transcends mere espionage, delving into the human spirit’s resilience and the power of daring to defy convention. Clementine emerges as an inspiring and compelling protagonist, defying clichés and personifying courage in a time when audacity was a form of rebellion.
Intriguingly, Schaffert masterfully humanizes even the Nazi antagonists, revealing that they, too, bear their burdens of personal tragedies. This insight deepens the narrative’s complexity, making their choices all the more sinister and monstrous. For history enthusiasts seeking a sumptuous blend of romance and resistance, “The Perfume Thief” is a treasure trove that demands attention. Schaffert’s exploration of queer and female representation throughout history is a testament to the courage of those whose contributions have often been marginalized.
From its enthralling opening to its bittersweet conclusion, The Perfume Thief envelopes readers in its world of sensory delights. Like Clem’s perfumes, this book lingers in your memory, leaving an indelible mark on your heart and soul.
